Agri chief to grace nat'l banana gab

AGRICULTURE Secretary Arthur Yap will be arrive next week to grace the National Banana Marketing Conference slated from April 14 and 15 at the Grand Men Seng Hotel.

The secretary will give a situationer on the present status of the banana industry in the country.

Loving Jarabelo, secretariat of the conference, said in an interview that he will definitely come to join the industry's stakeholders.

Salvador Salakop, chief of the Agribusiness Marketing Assistance Service of the Department of Agriculture (DA), will also arrive to present an overview of the whole industry and the roadmap which tackles the future of the banana industry as related to its present and future demands in the world market.

The conference is organized by the Banana Industry Council of Southern Mindanao, Incorporated (Bicsmin) with support coming from DA 11 and Growth with Equity in Mindanao 2 (GEM 2) program of the United States Agency for International Development (Usaid).

The conference seeks to share best practices in banana industry development and agri-entrepreneurship; determine market opportunities and link the producers to viable markets; bring issues and concerns from the regional players and provide courses of action; build a strong marketing networks and linkages; and develop markets for the native bananas in fresh and processed forms.

Around 300 participants from all over the country are expected to join the event. This will be composed of individual growers, cooperatives, associations, investors, research institutions, academe, among others.
