Mayor orders crackdown on blaring videoke pubs
By Raquel C. Bagnol

IN ADDITION to their regular duties, chiefs of different police precincts in Davao City are tasked to look into the problem of videoke houses whose loud noise disturbs neighboring residents at night.

This was the order of Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte during Sunday television program "Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa."

"The loud noise coming from videoke houses has been a problem for the residents in some areas of the city for quite sometime now, and I would like the station commanders of the respective areas to take charge of this problem," Duterte said.

He added that music is considered loud and is already a noise when it can be heard on the road.

He said noise is a form of nuisance, which is regulated. Thus, authorities can confiscate videoke machines causing nuisance to residents.

"Those operating these loud videoke machines are ignorant of the laws. They think that just because they bought a videoke machine then they can play these as loud as they want," he said in the dialect.

He added that if people really want to sing, he would be willing to conduct an amateur singing competition every week at the Rizal Park where contestants can sing their throats out without disturbing their neighbors.

"You sing there facing the statue of Jose Rizal," he said.
