INTERNATIONAL Master (IM) Idelfonso Datu edged top-seed grandmasters Rogelio Antonio Jr. and IM Mark Paragua via the tiebreak to capture the Open title even as hometown bets ruled the Kiddies division at the close Sunday of the Filway/Time Life Rapid Open Chess Tournament at the SM City Davao entertainment center.

Datu, a 33-year-old Ateneo de Manila University chess varsity coach, tallied 7.5 points along with Antonio and Paragua in the nine-round Swiss System format tournament sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines. Datu finished third in the Manila edition of the meet.

Davao City chessers Danilo Engay Jr. and Dawngrace Pacana, meanwhile, topped the kiddie boys' and girls' events, respectively.

Loreshyl Cuizon of Cagayan de Oro City emerged champion in the women's category as she scored six points for the P10,000 cash prize awarded by Filway president Hector Tagaysay and GM Eugene Torre, who finished at distant 13th place with six points.

National Master (NM) Roland Nolte had higher tiebreaks to beat other 7.0 scoreres Rustum Tolentino and Panabo City's Henry Lopez for the fourth spot. Tolentino and Lopez settled for fifth and sixth, respectively.

Finishing behind IM Barlo Nadera, best under rated player Ali Moctar, NM Ernesto Fernandez, Davao's Reynaldo Quiñonez and NM Prospero "Bebot" Cruz and NM Abdullah Unding who each made 6.5 apiece.

Torre led other 6.0 scorers, NM Elmer Sumngat, Davao's Fide Master Oliver Dimakiling, Bob Jones Liwagon, NM Erwin Retanal, Kidapawan City-born NM Reggie Olay and Davao's Samuel Yu.

In the distaff side, Cagayan de Oro's Cuison overcame Davao City woodpushers Rowela Acedo (5.5), Marie Angeli Dimakiling (5.0) and Jennifer Catilo (4.5).

Engay, however, ruled over Lennon Hart Salgados of Cagayan de Oro and Ruel Bukaling Jr. of Kapalong, Davao del Norte and John Galan in boys' kiddies, while Rowelyn Joy Acedo and Mares Mae Nuera finished behind Pacana in the girls' side.

John Ritter Belocura was named the top junior player while Jose Maria Basmayor won the top senior title for a special prize of P1,000 each.

The next leg will be in Cebu City from April 7-9.
