Corn production area in Mindanao expanded
ADDITIONAL 2,483 hectares of new agribusiness land will be planted with hybrid corn in Southern Mindanao this cropping season.
In line with the Department of Agriculture's (DA) Goal 1 that aims to develop new agribusiness land, DA in Southern Mindanao targeted a total of 3,400 hectares to be planted with hybrid corn this year.
Of which, 800 hectares are found in Davao del Norte, 600 hectares in Compostela Valley, and 2,000 hectares in Davao Oriental. Of the above target, 2,483 hectares are now ready for planting.
Agriculture regional executive director Roger Chio said aside from developing additional area for corn production, DA also intensifies its corn hybridization program by promoting the use of hybrid corn seeds to increase production in the region.
As support to the corn farmers, 1,361 bags of hybrid corn seeds will be distributed in Davao del Norte, 600 bags in Compostela Valley Province, and 2,000 bags in Davao Oriental.
DA also committed 1 unit of farm tractor each for Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental, and Compostela Valley; 3 units multi-purpose drying pavement each for Davao Oriental, Davao del Norte, and Compostela Valley; 1 unit hauling truck each for the three provinces, and construction of one warehouse for the three provinces.
"We are hoping that more area will be planted with corn and that our corn farmers will use hybrid corn seeds to reach our goal of making our farmers productive," Chio said.
