By Jenny Molbog-Mendoza

OFFICIALS of the Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines-East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-Eaga) economic cooperation will meet from April 14 to 15 in Kuala Lumpur, Malysia to discuss matters concerning the organization's major thrusts for this year.

Mindanao Economic Development Council (Medco) Chair Jesus Dureza said in an interview Monday that this month's senior officials meeting would just be a prelude to the upcoming BIMP-Eaga assembly slated in September.

"This will just be a preparatory meeting to the senior officials meeting to be held in Brunei anytime September. We don't know yet kung ano ang mga topic na pag-uusapan during the meeting but definitely kasali dito ang development of various projects ng BIMP-Eaga," he said.

Among the products and projects that are included in BIMP-Eaga's list of priority this year are: Halal industry, tourism and agri-industry.

Dureza said initial plans and actions on Halal industry have already been taken by BIMP-Eaga. One of which is the establishment of a multinational corporation in Brunei that will handle the production of Halal chicken to be imported to the Middle East.

Dureza said the economic cooperation is also working hard on how to package BIMP-Eaga as a premiere destination both for leisure and investment.

Dureza and some representatives from the Department of Trade and Industry-11 and Mindanao Business Council will consist the delegation from Mindanao.
