'Laarni' and more
By Marissa S. Te Eng Fo

"IT WAS a night to remember" if I am to borrow the words of intellectual Aida Rivera-Ford of Ford Academy of the Arts, located at the Ladislawa Avenue, Buhangin, Davao City, as she described the hype of the recently concluded operetta Laarni.

The Holy Cross gym was filled to the brim with viewers of the operetta. Laarni is a story of self-importance, pride of culture, bravery and as most of us would definitely find, an irresistible love story.

Laarni is based on Loreto Paras-Sulit's short story of "fierce hearts". It shows the exciting encounter of the proud maiden with Maharlika, the handsome valiant hero of the story who later becomes a "rajah" after the death of his father.

The story depicts the bravery of Maharlika saving his beautiful maiden from the claws of a rich Chinese merchant who held the beloved in captivity inside the ship.

The turmoil ends with the cobra killing the villain. This quaint love story ends with the unity of Maharlika and Laarni in the most beautiful grandest wedding ever known.

Miss Ford, together with members of the school faculty, family and friends and alongside at least 20 Prisaad schools, watched in awe the cultural treat, where for the first time, a dancing camel becomes a part of the Maguindanao majestic wedding entourage.

After Laarni, 16 native and foreign dances were shown in rapid succession to the delight of all! After the very successful performance, members of the Ford faculty left for a group tour of Vigan, Baguio and Laoag.

This is another way of really saying "thanks" for a job well done and definitely expands the horizon of learning.

By the way, Ford Acedemy of the Arts offers several summer courses form visual arts workshop to landscaping to aikido.

To you Ms. Ford, more power! May the force be with you!
