In a telephone interview, Police Officer 2 Norberto Calica of the Makilala police investigation section said dela Cruz and his nephew were onboard a motorcycle at around 7:30 p.m. to collect bets for the "last two" numbers game when the suspects flagged them down at a dark portion of the highway in Makilala and shot them.

Calica said based on their initial investigations, personal grudges could have triggered the suspects to shoot the victims.

"We can't make conclusions or any linkages yet because we are still investigating the incident and we have yet to establish the identity of the suspects," Calica said.

A small bag containing bills of various denominations and coins was recovered from the crime scene. The victims succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds in different parts of their bodies.
