New village proposed to be created
By Aurea A. Gerundio

ANOTHER barangay may soon be created, this time to be carved out of Barangay Marilog in the third district of Davao City if the City Council will approve Tuesday during its regular session the creation of Barangay Marahan as a separate barangay.

The resolution, filed by Councilor Amilbangsa T. Manding, to enact an ordinance creating Barangay Marahan out of the mother Barangay of Marilog proper is on its third and final reading in the council Tuesday.

If the City Council approves Tuesday the creation of Barangay Marahan, Davao City will now have a total of 183 barangays.

Based on the copy of the resolution obtained by Sun.Star, Manding stated that the Local Government Code (LGC) provides that "a barangay may be created out of a territory in a highly urbanized city where such territory shall have a population of at least 5,000 inhabitants as certified by the National Statistics Office."

The LGC, Manding said, further provides that the creation of another barangay shall not reduce the population of the original barangay to the required number of inhabitants.

In this case, Manding said the creation of Barangay Marahan, which will have a population of 5,073 inhabitants, would not reduce the population of Barangay Marilog to less than the minimum requirement prescribed by the LGC.

Manding said Barangay Marilog has a total of 15,691 inhabitants.

Last year, the council approved the creation of two more barangays from Barangay Pampanga, upping the number of the barangays in the city to 182 from its original 180.
