SM athletes open campaign

ZAMBOANGA CITY -- Southern Mindanao opens its campaign Tuesday in 2005 National Private School Athletic Association that kicked off Monday at the crowded Joaquin Enriquez Memorial Complex And for the brave band of 180 SM athletes, the question is whether this would be the right time or will the heartbreak linger on for yet another year?

In order to make this tough goal possible, the Smi track stars and swimmers must show their worth beginning today as they start their bid for prestige and honor in different venues here.

Gary Baluarte vie for the coveted gold in the 10, 000-meter walk signaling the start of the week-long competition at 6:30 a.m., while Hobert King Adovo and Nonato Teodoro strut their stuff in long jump.

Other SM bets going for the gold on Day One are Marlon Oracion and Ricky Cordero (100-meter), Arnold Perez and Eric Simacas (110m Hurdles), Darelle Joy Cabanero and Edward Pascua (discuss throw), Orlan Leonor and Ernesto Manolong (800 run) and Raul Lamprea in 3,000 and 10-k run.

Over at the pool, seeing action are Carlo Rodriguez, Fatima Alamara and Arlene Verdeprado.

Hopes are high for SM swimmers, particularly Rodriguez who will be going up against top class swimmers from the powerhouse National Capital Region.

The Australia-bound Rodriguez pocketed 3 gold medals during the Ched National Palaro in Bacolod City last year that lifted his team to a third-place finish behind NCR and Western Visayas.

"This is the right time for us to win the over-all. We really have a good chance to get it," athletic manager Joaquin Sarabia told his wards during the final briefing Sunday night after the two-hour Fellowship Night hosted by Ateneo De Zamboanga University.
