Another cop meted death
By Raquel C. Bagnol

ANOTHER policeman will join thousands of convicts in death row after he was found guilty of shooting to death a resident of Davao City five years ago.

In an 11-page decision, Judge Jesus V. Quitain of the Regional Trial Court- Branch 15 convicted to death Police Officer 3 Reynaldo Dequiros, formerly detailed at the Investigation Section (IS) of the Davao City Philippine Constabulary, for the death of Noli Dadoire of Magallanes St.

Quitain also ordered Dequiros to pay the P186,000 as total damages to the heirs of the victim.

Dadoire's 17-year-old sister filed the complaint in court and claimed that she and her brother were mixing paint for their house at Anda Riverside at around 10:15 a.m. on October 4, 2000 when Dequiros arrived.

The complainant said Dequiros shot her brother on the head, killing him instantly.

The complainant also said that prior to the incident, Dequiros was looking for the victim. She said Dequiros accused her brother of having an illicit affair with the policeman's wife.

For the defense, Dequiros denied the accusations in court. He said he was on duty at the IS office when the incident happened.

He also explained that if he was found positive to the paraffin test conducted on him, it was because he joined a target shooting the day before.

Dequiros admitted confronting Dadiore because he was hurt when his wife left him, but he added that he had no ill feelings towards Dadiore and has no reason at all to kill him.

After evaluation of the evidence presented, the court ruled in favor of the complainant and junked the defense of Dequiros.

For this year, Dequiros is the second policeman in Davao City meted with the capital punishment by Quitain.

Last February, the court convicted Senior Police Officer 1 Egardo Aresgado of the Talomo Police Precinct in Davao City for shooting a taxi driver to death in February 22, 2002.
