Rebels to pay for soldier's death, 3 others: army By Ben O. Tesiorna
THE Armed Forces of the Philippines vowed that rebels would pay for the death of Marine Staff Sergeant Jeremias Rosete and three of his colleagues.
In a statement, Major Roberto Dumalahay, of the 5th Civil Relations Group, condemned the killing of Rosete, Wilfredo Maldecir, Pepito Simbulan and Herminia Sorongon by suspected members of the New People's Army (NPA) in September 2002.
"What they did was highly condemnable to the highest order, the captives should be treated humanely based on the protocols of war. Now they should face the consequences of their actions," Dumalahay said.
Dumalahay said that the four were executed by the Valentine Palamine Command of Far South Region, with the NPA hierarchy attempting to keep it a secret.
"Just last January this year when the military exposed that they (NPA) already executed Rosete they issued a statement claiming that he was still alive but sickly," Dumalahay recalled.
"How deceptive can they get? Out of desperation, they deny that they killed Rosete and the three other civilians to conceal their evil deeds, they don't have any single rights to claim the lives of those people," Dumalahay added.
The military officer said no less than the family of Rosete were deceived by the rebels by telling them lies about the condition of their father and even assured them that he was still alive but sickly even if they knew that he was long been executed.
"They are simply liars, is the kind of people claiming to be the servants of oppressed and exploited masses as well as the downtrodden people? I don't think so. The killing of Rosete and three other civilians only proved that they are criminals worthy to be called terrorists," Dumalahay said.
He revealed that elements of 6th Infantry Division under Major General Raul Relano are now conducting massive and hot pursuit operation to hunt down the criminals who perpetrated the unlawful killings and suffer the penalty of their acts accordingly. (with PR)
