PWD athletes need funds to compete
ATHLETES among Davao City's persons with disabilities (PWD) are lobbying for a substantial amount, P235,000, to defend their crown in this year's Visayas-Mindanao Games for PWDs scheduled April 20-22 in Zamboanga City.
Davao City emerged overall champion in last year's games held in Mati, Davao Oriental.
Dr. Nieto Vitto, chairperson of the Philippine Sports Association for the differently abled (PhilSpada), told the Regional Council for the Welfare of Disabled Persons (RCWDP) in a meeting that 37 PWD athletes excluding 20 coaches and caregivers are supposed to leave for Zamboanga City at least a week before the games.
During the meeting, National Council for the Welfare of Disabled Persons (NCWDP) official Fel Labanon and DSWD 11 Director Merceditas Jabagat expressed concern over the need to send the city's PWD athletes to defend their crown.
Boy Sexcion and Bong Comiling, officials of the Association of Differently Abled Persons (ADAP), said Davao City Councilor Domingo Dalodo, chair of the City Council's committee on social services and development, has offered to help address the problem.
Sexcion said Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte allocated P500,000 in last year's Mindanao games when Davao City became overall champion, winning 68 gold medals, 30 silver, and 28 bronze medals.
