Milkfish growers export produce to US
By Jenny Molbog-Mendoza

BANGUS (milkfish) growers of the Mariculture Park located in the Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos) have been exporting their produce since last year.

Erlinda Ali, Extension Training and Communications Division chief of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (Bfar) 11, said in an interview Monday that among the major markets of the region's bangus are the United States and Hawaii.

These markets, Ali said, requiring bangus exports to weigh a minimum of 500 grams each.

This requirement, she added, is one of the challenges that the growers are facing right now.

"Medyo mahirap ang ganoong requirement kasi minsan hindi talaga aabot nang ganoon kalaki ang bangus natin pero the growers are coping naman. It's a good development in our bangus industry kasi dati may oversupply pa tayo but right now, may malalaking markets na tayong inaasahan," she said.

To date, the importers' monthly volume requirement is pegged at around 10 tons but unfortunately this volume is not met at times because of low production output due to high price of commercial feeds.

To meet the demand, Bfar 11 is recommending to the bangus growers that they further expand the number of their fish cages.

Bangus culture through fish cages is proven to be more efficient since the cropping season is improved by 100 percent, thus production volume is likewise increased.
