By Raquel C. Bagnol

IT'S all systems go for the Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos) as the island bids to further boost its tourism industry.

"For the first time, Igacos will hold its Caracoles Festival which we hope could further present Igacos as a prime tourist destination not only to the country but to the world," Pe Benito said.

Pe Benito said Caracoles (which means "shells") symbolize the richness of the island's marine life.

"We will be celebrating the Caracoles festival from sunset of April 30 to the sunrise of May 1 in the municipality of Babak," Pe Benito said.

She added that during the sunset-to-sunrise festival, there would be a parade that would feature costumes symbolizing sea creatures.

"This costume parade is open for all islanders (Igacos) only and only 30 members will be allowed for each group," Pe Benito said. She added that prizes at stake for the costume parade are P75,000, P50,000 and P25,000 for the first, second and third place winners respectively.

Igacos information officer Noel Daquioag said that the Caracoles festival would be different from all the other festivals in the country as there will be no show down but just pure fun for everyone.

"We aim to make this festival the latest addition to the country's numerous festivals but with a distinctive unique feature," Daquiaog said.

He added that among the other activities prepared are Estrella del Mar or the "Search for Star of the Sea", an individual contest open for everybody, a Gloria Maris or fashion show featuring tropical wear, and a Battle of the Bands.

Pe Benito said there are no registration fees for the various contests, and interested participants may call the following numbers: 221-2121, 305-3838 or cell phone number 0917-719-3974.
