'Catfish kill' affected only 1 pond: agri office By Aurea A. Gerundio
DAVAO City Agriculturist Rocelio Tabay said Monday the reported massive fishkill at Los Amigos, Tugbok district was an isolated case.
Tabay said the City Agriculture Office conducted investigation Friday at the Los Amigos area following the reported massive fishkill on the previous day.
"The investigation showed only the pond owned by Dr. (Greg) Domingo experienced a massive fishkill that's why we considered it as an isolated case. Ang mga katabing ponds wala namang fishkill na nangyari," Tabay said.
Tabay said councilman Simeon Alejaga, who also owns a pond just about 20 meters away from Domingo's, was not aware of the reported fishkill until he discovered it on television.
"Kagawad (councilman) Alejaga said other pond owners in the area were just alarmed by the presence of some media people. Doon lang din nila nalaman na mayroong fishkill," Tabay said.
Tabay said they are still awaiting the results of the investigation by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources 11 on the matter.
Their office is also looking into allegations that the banana plantations located nearby would have possibly caused the fishkill, he said.
Tabay also said the water source of the ponds at Los Amigos, including Domingo's, was about 9 kilometers from the location of the banana plantations.
"We are still going on with the investigation kasi kung contaminated ang water source dahil sa existence ng mga banana plantations, hindi lang sana ang fishpond ni Dr. Domingo ang maaapektuhan," Tabay said.
