Dire need made some ignore strike call
By Joy G. Romares

SOME drivers of passenger jeepneys were on the road Monday, ignoring the call for a nationwide strike by militant groups. The reason: dire need.

Richard Muñez, public utility jeepney (PUJ) driver who plies the Ecoland Subdivision-SM route, told Sun. Star Davao he needs money to feed his family.

"Hangtod hapon gyud ko mamasada kay wala mi ikapalit og bugas, dili gyud mi makapalit og bisan isa ka kilo nga bugas ani ugma kung dili ko mogawas (I will be driving till afternoon lest we will not have money to buy rice for tomorrow if I will not drive)," Muñez said.

Muñez said his driving today doesn't even have anything to do with the prospect of earning more since the jeepney fare for Ecoland is fixed.

"Dili ma-doble akong kita ani kay singko ra man gihapon ang bayad, maayo unta kung diyes kay madoble gyud, bintaha lang gyud hinuon kay gamay ra ang nagbiyahe, daku-dako akong mauli (I don't think my earning today will double because the fare is still fixed at P5. If because of the strike it becomes P10 then it will double, but this is not the case. It's just an advantage because there are less plying our route today so I expect to earn just a little more)," Muñez said.

On the other hand, Danny, another PUJ driver in the Sasa-J.P Laurel Avenue, said he was blocked by militants along Agdao Flyover, but he kept on driving.

"Ka-upat na nakong balik, perme ko ginaharang, uli na daw lagi ko pero unsaon ta man na, dili na pwede kay dili pud namo isakripisyo among pamugas (I have already gone around four times and each time they tried to convince me to go home. But what can I do, I cannot afford not to earn today to buy rice)," Danny said.

Richard and Danny, however, said the militants never harmed them and just tried to convince them to join the strike.
