By Ben O. Tesiorna

THE family of a 42-year-old man stabbed by a policeman's brother is seeking justice amid reports the cop is helping the suspect evade the authorities.

The victim identified as Reynaldo Zaspa Sr. of Magsaysay-3 in Mati, Davao Oriental was reportedly stabbed by his neighbor Ronelito Canoy in the morning of April 5.

John Zaspa, son of the victim, said his father wanted to buy coconut wine (tuba) from a nearby sari-sari store when the incident happened.

He said the storeowner refused to give his father the wine that irked the victim. The young Zaspa said his father then figured in an argument with the suspect and along with the latter's brother--Gigi Canoy, and one Amay Barsalote.

"Tapos gitabangan na dayon nila ug kulata akong papa. Si Ronelito daw maoy midunggab sa akong papa tapos kadtong igsoon maoy mibunal ug bato sa nawong," John Zaspa said.

He said his father succumbed to nine stab wounds in different parts of his body and bruises in his face.

John said Canoy and his companions fled after the incident.

"Nangahadlok na man gud mutestigo ang mga tao didto kay pulis daw lagi ang igsoon sa suspek," John said.

The victim's son admitted his father is troublesome in their area but says killing him is just too much of a punishment.

Davao Oriental police director Binevenido Latag vowed to conduct a follow investigation of the incident to arrest the suspects.
