Aton tops regional chess By Marianne L. Saberon
TORIL player Arnel Nino Aton edged two other 6.0 scorers via tiebreaks to rule the 2005 National Chess Championship SEA Games regional qualifying tournament at the Gaisano Mall of Davao Bingo area Sunday.
Fourth-seed Aton bested Number 1 Dharim Bacus and 18th-seed Bienvinido Tipay who settled for second and third place, respectively, in the non-master chessfest.
Aton got 30.5 tiebreaks while Bacus had 26.5 and Tipay 25.5.
The three wood pushers along with the rest of the top 10 players are qualified to join the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games second phase qualifying round where they will be pitted against rated players.
Vincent Umayan and Jerwell Andoy tallied 5.5 each for fourth and fifth place while sixth to 10th placers Harrison Maamo, Christopher Zaldivar, Brene Parreño, Cyrus Donasco and Jose Henry Fajardo also qualified.
A total of 68 players competed in the three-day competition.
National Chess Federation of the Philippines regional director Ronnie Tabudlong said the top 10 players might compete in the second phase to be held either in Metro Manila or Tagaytay at their own expense.
Grand Masters Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. and Eugene Torre and International Master Mark Paragua are top-seeds in the second phase.
