Davao's Basas cops 2nd plum
DAVAO City pride Mary Ann Basas avenged her first leg loss by nipping Rubilen Amit 9-7 to pocket the BSCP women's billiards tryouts third leg title at the Coronado Lanes Billiards Hall in Makati City over the weekend.
Basas said in the vernacular "I sighed in relief when Amit missed in the 14th rack. I was then telling myself this is really my leg."
Basas was consistent in the winners' break format but Amit was no pushover keeping close for a 6-6 standoff.
Had it not been for Amit's miscue on the sixth ball, the match could have been a 7-all deadlock in the 14th frame.
RP women's billiards coach Edgard "Boyet" Asonto was impressed by Basas' steady play, saying, "She's very determined. A little improvement in her preparations, she could be ready for world-class competitions."
It was Basas' second straight title to stretch her lead in the rankings with a total of 190 points in the past three legs.
Amit amassed 150 points to keep the second spot in the overall standings of the event organized by the Billiards and Snooker Congress of the Philippines (BSCP).
Basas and Amit received trophies and Nokia mobile phones each from the organizers.
The 19-year-old Dabawenya cue artist ousted Iris Rañola 9-4 while Amit pulled off a rousing 9-4 triumph over Bing Flores in the semi-final round.
The top five players in the rankings after five legs will join the national training pool.
Iris Rañola (110), Magda Say (100), Jhoanna Dee (80), Toni Anne Nobleza (80) and Bing Flores (80) are hoping to further improve their play.
BSCP president Ernesto Fajardo said the country won't be without a medal in billiards in the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games and Asian Games as long as the players pursue their training and are given more exposure. (MLS)
