City backs use of alternative fuels
DAVAO City Administrator Wendell Avisado said the government should look for alternative fuels for transport to address fuel consumption and the increase in the price of oil products.
During the recently concluded stakeholders' consultation on Clean Cities program held at Grand Men Seng Hotel, the City Government of Davao supported the Sustainable Energy Development Program (SEDP) that seeks to improve the quality of air in highly urbanized areas through the use of alternative fuels such as compressed natural gas, coco biodiesel or coco methyl ester and fuel ethanol for transport.
Local experts on alternative fuels and representatives from the Philippine Department of Energy from Manila came to Davao to present and discuss the importance of alternative fuel technologies available in the country, Avisado said.
"We cannot rely on fossil fuels alone for our energy requirements. Better solutions have been found and are currently being explored," said Engineer Robert Ables, program officer of the Philippine Coconut Authority during a press conference on alternative fuels.
"Shifting to these alternative fuels will generate additional employment and new infrastructures as well as help the government gain energy independence," Avisado said.
The use of alternative fuel Avisado said will even spur economic development and provide cleaner air leading to a healthier environment with better quality of life.
Because of the strong political will of the local executive in the implementation of the Clean Air Act, Davao City was chosen as the pilot area of the Clean Cities Program of PDOE and the formation of the Clean Cities Davao Coalition.
