Corteza knocked off in Asian 9-Ball qualifying
DAVAO City's Lee Vann Corteza lost to an unheralded player, Roel Esquillo, in the qualifying tournament of the 2005 San Miguel Asian 9-Ball Tour Manila leg at the Bowling Inn Billiards Hall Wednesday.
Corteza, who bagged the Manila championship last year, finally bid his hopes goodbye for a slot in the main draw of the $50,000 cuefest slated June 3 to 5 at the Robinson's Galleria.
The tournament serves as the final stop of the four-leg tour that also covered Singapore topped by Davao City bet Gandy Valle, Jakarta won by Efren "Bata" Reyes and Kaohsiung in Chinese Taipei.
Valle and Reyes are seeded along with Francisco "Django" Bustamante in the ultimate showdown that also features the finest cue artists from India, Indonesia, Chinese Taipei, Japan, Malaysia and Vietnam.
Esquillo, however, fell at the hands of Carlo Biado 6-11. The latter arranged a semi-finals clash against Ramil "Bebeng Bacolod" Gallego who beat Venancio Tanio 11-9 earlier.
Ronnie Alcano stunned veteran internationalist Dennis Orcullo to meet Antonio "Nickoy" Lining in the other semis encounter.
The top three finishers in the winner's break event will qualify in the Manila leg. (MLS)
