PERENNIAL champion Philip Ocon of the Davao Region lived up to his billing by winning the secondary boys 800-meter gold medal in the Palarong Pambansa track and field competition in Iloilo City.
The 16-year-old Ocon, the younger brother of bemedalled Davao City track star Roy who is now based in Manila, clocked two minutes and 01.9 seconds in ruling the event at the Iloilo Sports Center.
Ocon, the pride of Calinan National High School, also took the golds in 800-meter and 1,500-meter in the 2005 National Open. He is set to go for a twin kill when he sees action in the 1,500 race before the Palaro trackfest wraps up this weekend.
Ocon's late Wednesday afternoon victory came on the heels of Dabawenya Quima Cuaton's gold-medal performance in elementary girls javelin throw event in the morning.
The 13-year-old Cuaton, a Nangan Elementary School student in Davao city, registered 31.25 meters.
Junel Boncit of Compostela Valley added a silver for the Davraa Region in secondary boys 3,000 meter steeplechase.
In swimming, the Davao Region salvaged a silver in elementary girls 4X100 medley relay in the second day of competition with 50-meter butterfly gold medallist Anna Celina Gonzalez, 100-meter backstroke silver winner Alyanna Malabanan, Stephanie Decierdo and Bea Marie Nazareno in the cast.
Davao's elementary boys 50-meter butterfly bronze performer Jose Joaquin Gonzalez placed fourth in 50-meter freestyle. He also led the 4X100 medley relay team to a fourth finish.
The Davao Region swimming team tallied a total of one gold, two silvers, two bronzes and two fourth finishes as of yesterday press time.
Malabanan qualified for the finals in 50-meter backstroke while teammates Allan Jovero and Leah Jullianni Rodriguez eyed the golds in secondary boys and girls 200-meter backstroke.
Cousins Jose Joaquin and Celina were given another shot for the medal race in 100-meter butterfly in the elementary boys and girls divisions.
Davao Region elementary and secondary boys 4X50 freestyle relay teams also gained finals berths.
Meanwhile, Panabo City's James Bulicatin and Davao City's Lyndon Sombilon were fighting for the secondary boys boards 1 and 2 gold medals, respectively, in the final sixth round of the chess tournament.
Both players were ahead by 0.5 points among the other regions as of the fifth round.
Candidate national woman master Marie Angeli Dimakiling of Davao city stayed strong with an unbeaten record in secondary girls board 1 with 5.0 points.
Over at the Iloilo Sports Complex covered court, Davao Region gained two finals seats in badminton.
Katherine Mayono and Diosan Abangan, both players from Rizal Memorial Colleges, whipped the Aredodon-Collantes tandem of Region 7, 15-13, 15-9 in secondary girls doubles semi-finals.
Davao's elementary girls doubles team of Irish Aberilla and Ana Abangan also shared the limelight after pulling off a 15-5, 15-8 win over Isidro-Mahinay of Region 6.
In lawn tennis, Davao Region bet Macy Serrano downed Lores Francisco of Region 6, 8-3, in the secondary girls singles while the doubles team of Steffi Dizon and Lourdes Binoya beat Region7 bets Kersti Soquinyo and Mary Baraguias.
