Davao swimmers gear up for Brunei stint By Marianne L. Saberon
DAVAO City's Anna Celina Gonzalez and Alyanna Patricia Malabanan are gearing up for their stints in the Southeast Asia (SEA) Age-Group Swimming Championships in Brunei Darussalam on June 2 to 6.
Coastland Davao Swim Team (CDST) official Chito Malabanan said, "After their strong second over-all finish in the Palarong Pambansa elementary girls swimming, Celina and Alyanna will shift their focus in the Brunei meet as part of the national team. Jose Joaquin Gonzalez and Francis Isaguirre will also join them."
The 11-year-old Celina was hailed most bemedaled female athlete in the Palaro with three gold medals to her credit--200-meter individual medley, 50-meter and 100-meter butterfly events.
Alyanna, on her part, got the elementary girls 50-meter backstroke gold, 100-meter backstroke silver and 100-meter butterfly bronze.
Jose Joaquin finished with a silver in elementary boys 100-meter butterfly and then salvaged a bronze in the 50-meter event while Isaguirre took the 100-meter backstroke bronze.
Celina said in yesterday's Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn, "Mabibilis ang mga makakalaro ko sa Brunei pero gagawin ko ang lahat para sa bansa (I would be up against very fast swimmers in Brunei but I will do everything for the country."
Alyanna, on her part, said: "Sana manalo ako (I hope to win) to make the country proud."
Chito added Celina and Jose Joaquin are entered in the 50-, 100- and 200- meter butterfly events while Alyanna will see action in backstroke and Isaguirre in breastroke events.
"Our swimmers will leave for Brunei on May 30 along with the rest of the national team members," Chito said.
