It's all go for Lumbanka event
IT'S all systems go for the Lumbanka 2005 at the stretch of Times Beach on Saturday and Sunday.
Organizer Davao City Councilor Leonardo Avila III bared this during the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn Thursday.
Avila said, "We are looking forward to a successful event this weekend. Most of the participants from other cities and provinces will start arriving on Friday and we are very happy to welcome them. I've heard some of their mayors are also coming."
He said entries from as far as Saranggani, Zamboanga and General Santos City will try their luck against local bets in the 16.5 horsepower open Tora-Tora category and 5.5 horsepower banca open.
Other categories entered, according to Avila, are the inter-coastal barangay race for bancas with 16 horsepower engines, kayak all-men, mixed and bugsay tandems.
"This is our first time to hold this kind of event in such a wide scope. We want to institutionalize this to become an annual event that will be held every Ocean Month of May," Avila said.
Close to 300 participants will strut their stuff in Lumbanka, designed to bring back the people's attention to the Gulf and bring the best of Times Beach alive in the two-day tournament.
Avila added, "This will be a festival of sort at Times Beach and is hoped to become a tourist attraction."
Eliminations will start on Saturday while the finals is set on Sunday.
Lumbanka is a joint endeavor of the Davao Gulf Management Council and City Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro) with Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte and Honda Philippines as sponsors.
Duterte sponsored P100,000 for cash prizes and other expenses while Honda donated 12 engines worth P30,000 each as additional prizes.
A cash prize of P15,000 will go to the 16.5 horsepower open champion while P10,000 and P5,000 will be awarded to the second and third placers, respectively. (MLS)
