18 candles for Nan
By Jojie Alcantara

IN 2003, Maikee Aportadera and I hosted Jana "Pebbles" Pimentel's 18th grand ball at Marco Polo Hotel. Thus started my warm friendship with the Pimentel family of Tandag, Surigao del sur.

At the time, her younger sister, Joanna Pauline Pimentel, was a pretty young tomboyish girl who felt a little awkward dolling up for her sister's cotillion.

She made a heartwarming message for her ate back then that left both crying. Nan, as she is fondly called, exuded a different personality from her sister's quiet enigma.

She is the youngest daughter in a brood of four: John Paul, Joanna Pauline, and John Vincent.

It was no surprise that when it was her turn to blossom into a young woman on April 9, a shift of theme in her debutante's party at the Marco Polo was very apt--Carnivale! for a feisty young lady who's coming of age is both a delight and amazement for doting parents Johnny Ty Pimentel and Rosalinda "Liles" Cruz Pimentel and family.

The Grand Ballroom of Marco Polo Hotel was decked with such grandeur fit for a spirited woman whose ambition in life is to become a successful lawyer.

The room simply emanates a festive atmosphere as soon as the Bonjee Entertainment clowns come in to herald the arrival of the pretty debutante in a stunning fuschia (I'd rather call it "hot pink") gown created by Bobby Castillo of Chardin Design Team.

The Offbeat Band and Missy and Company provided music for the atmosphere of a Venetian Carnival.

A touching message came from Dad Johnny who talked about Nan's determined character and funny personality, while Mom Lelis didn't have the heart to say a word this time for fear she would shed tears for her baby in an instant.

The audience laughed at Nan's bloopers and wacky "bulol" antics, as confided by her family and best friends.

After the traditional presentations, cake ceremony and toast to the celebrant, among the highlights were the video of Nan's growing up years, the grand masquerade, and belly dancers performing for the audience.

My co-host German Yap and I donned feathered masks for an enchanting masquerade evening filled with many well-wishers. Nan's friends and classmates from Davao and Manila were present to celebrate her most important day.

The whole unique ensemble was directed by choreographer Allan Hioca. Video and photography was by Jersy Studio. Cakes were from Natalie's by Booboo Carandang.

The Carnivale team was splendidly arranged by Chardin team headed by Miss Beng Mejos. Guests went home with a miniature gold mask delicately boxed in glitters of gold, and good memories of a young tomboy who grew up into a lovely swan.
