Asean Tourism Forum to be held in Davao
By Aurea A. Gerundio

DAVAO City and not Myanmar will be hosting the Asean Tourism Forum in January next year.

This was bared Monday by Patricia "Patmei" Ruivivar, chief of staff of Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte.

Ruivivar said the countries chosen to host the same forum are by alphabetical order. She said Myanmar was supposedly the host for this year's forum.

But since Myanmar has imparted that they are not yet ready for the event, Ruivivar said the Philippines would take over as the one next to Myanmar in alphabetical order.

Ruivivar said President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo chose the event to be held in Davao City.

"This forum is the first time in Mindanao. Cebu and Manila have hosted the same forum already. The President's choice to hold the Asean Tourism Forum in Davao City is a demonstration of trust that we can manage the event despite negative reports about Mindanao," Ruivivar said.

Ruivivar said buyers and sellers from around 50 countries would also set up an exhibit tentatively at the PTA grounds.

"Davao City is prepared to hold the forum. In terms of hotels and transportation, kaya natin. We are expecting about 2,000 to 3,000 people to participate in this event," Ruivivar said, adding that the event is a good way to promote not only Davao City but also the entire Mindanao to foreign investors.
