Davao Oriental bet tops tora-tora race By Marianne L. Saberon
DAVAO Oriental's Rudy Abayon, aboard Hunters, sped past his rivals to emerge champion in the 16 horsepower Tora-Tora category of the 1st Lumbangka Festival 2005 at Times Beach over the weekend.
He received a cash prize of P16,000 in the two-day event jointly organized by the Davao Gulf Management Council and City Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro).
Abayon, who hails from Taragona, bested Sarangani entries Arsenio Baret and Jovito Veresrais, Puloy Adin of Sirawan, Federico Canoy of Sarangani and Joehar Mapuro of Madaum, Tagum.
In the 5.5 horsepower open with pamalong category, Basrawe Po of Darong, Santa Cruz bagged the title while Avelino Lagumbay of Brgy 76-A settled for the runner-up honors.
Trailing behind were Allan Onutan and Alkaser Po of Darong, Santa Cruz, Allen Casuya and Carlito Castaretas of Barangay 76-A.
Bago Aplaya's Nelson Manreza won the 16 horsepower Panagatan fishing boat event over Melanio Medina, Lito Camad of Bunawan, Ernelio Curambao, Edgardo Cartagena of Matina Aplaya and Samson Manreza.
Mario Santos and Henry Demigaya captured the inter-barangay Bugsay Tandem crown while William Emani and Aldrin Madjini placed second and Bernardo Cabrera and Felipe Saug finished third.
The mixed kayak tandem plum went to Dennis Beciera and Fatima Alamara who prevailed against Arnel Gabutero-Roxanne Sayago and Marvin Diel-Penalvi Jagonase.
Rodelo and Ernesto Meras bagged the championship in the kayak tandem open division to beat Arel Gadutero-Keith Argones and Beciera-Haidel Hamsin pairs.
Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte and Honda Philippines sponsored the inaugural tournament to be held annually during the Ocean Month of May.
