Corteza makes it By Marianne L. Saberon
LEE Vann Corteza of Davao City made it to the main draw of the 2nd Hope P1-Million All-Filipino Billiards Open after beating Luis Saberdo, 7-5, in the qualifying tournament at the AMF-Puyat Billiards Hall, Ever Gotesco Commonwealth Tuesday.
Corteza, 25, who hails from Mintal, and seeded player Gandy Valle of Boulevard will have their hands full as the million peso event kicks off today at LS-2 studio of IBC 13.
Corteza is expected to redeem himself from losing a slot in the Manila leg of the 2005 San Miguel Asian 9-Ball Tour which he won last year.
He earlier edged Godofredo Ducanes, 7-6, in the qualifier.
Antonio Gabica, Leonardo "Dodong" Andam and Antonio "Nickoy" Lining also racked up wins to keep their hopes alive.
Gabica crushed Jose del Rosario, 7-4, while Andam pulled off a 7-6 victory over Venancio Tanio and Lining downed Allan Cuartero, 7-5.
The main draw also parades pool sharks first Hope champion Francisco "Django" Bustamante, Efren "Bata" Reyes, reigning world pool champion Alex Pagulayan, Jose "Amang" Parica, Warren Kiamco, Rodolfo Luat and Ramil Gallego.
The Billiards and Snooker Congress of the Philippines (BSCP)-sanctioned cuefest joinlty organized by Puyat Sports and Jemah Television.
The San Miguel Manila leg is slated June 3 to 5 at the Robinson's Galleria.
