Mayor: P20 hike in Cola won't make a difference

A P20 INCREASE in the cost of living allowance (Cola) for workers is still not enough to support the daily needs of a family in Davao City, said Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte Sunday.

"The P20 increase is not enough. A casual worker who receives a P5,000 salary every month and who lives in the outskirts of the city could barely take home his pay, hence the need for an increase," Duterte said.

He added that an increase of only P20 Cola will not make a difference.

"Unsa'y mapalit sa P20? You can only buy cooking oil and fry your fingers kay di na ka kapalit og pritohonon anang P20," Duterte said.

He added that he is supporting the P125 across-the-board wage increase in order for Dabawenyos to survive.

In an earlier press conference, representatives of the Southern Philippines Federation of Labor (SPFL) said that a Dabawenyo needed to earn at least P524 daily in order to sustain a decent living for a family of five members everyday.

This amount is more than double the P209 minimum wage set by the Regional Tripartite Wage and Productivity Board (RTWPB).

Duterte's reaction came following the approval of the P20 increase in Cola for workers last Friday in Region 3 and the Cordillera Autonomous Region (CAR), which will take effect on June 15. (RCB)
