Quick compliance with anti-smoking law pleases mayor

MAYOR Rodrigo Duterte expressed satisfaction with the compliance of several establishments to the anti-smoking ordinance of Davao City, saying they could have taken the ordinance for granted had he not issued a warning against violators two Sundays ago.

"Naa ra man lagi na," was Duterte's reaction after eight big entertainment venues vowed to follow City Ordinance 43-02 (Comprehensive Anti-Smoking Ordinance) to the letter.

But the city mayor warned other establishments that continue to defy the ordinance, vowing that the city will give them a hard time running their businesses in the city.

"I will cancel your business permit," Duterte warned. The mayor issued the warning last May 22 giving violators 48 hours to comply with the anti-smoking ordinance.

Within the given time, the management of the Apo View Hotel expressed their full compliance with Duterte's order for the Liquid Bar to strictly follow the city's anti-smoking ordinance.

In a statement, the hotel management said that starting Tuesday they would be designating a non-smoking area inside the Liquid Bar.

"This is in conformity with Mayor Rodrigo Duterte's order that all establishments in Davao City must follow both Republic Act 9211 (Tobacco Regulation Act) and City Ordinance Number 43-02 (Comprehensive Anti-Smoking Ordinance) to the letter," the statement said.

Several other establishments including The Venue, Space Burger, Suka at Sili, Avenue S, Tostar Bar and Grill, Wheels and More, Station 91 and Stage 1 Resto Bar also expressed their willingness to comply.

Duterte appointed Edelito Domingo as the city's anti-smoking czar, giving him all the powers needed to fully enforce the said ordinance.

Domingo said he is coordinating with Davao City Police Office chief Catalino Cuy in enforcing the anti-smoking law.

"I guarantee that this is not a 'ningas cogon' move. My mandate is based on Mayor (Rodrigo) Duterte's statement that regardless whoever gets hurt I should enforce the law," Domingo said. (BOT)
