Seized taxi owner burned by abductor

THE kidnapped woman, who owned several taxicabs in Davao City, was reported to have died and her body burned by the taxi driver who abducted her on May 11.

Mayor Rodrigo Duterte on Sunday said the suspect, identified as 38-year-old Bartolome Calamba, confessed to authorities that he abducted Maricris Te, 32, inside her residence on Emerald Street at Delta Homes Subdivision in Matina, Davao City on the evening of May 11.

"The suspect said the victim died. But I believe she was killed by the suspect," Duterte said in the dialect.

The mayor revealed that after the victim's death, the suspect decided to burn her body and throw her remains at the Toril public market.

Duterte said he now ordered for the city's dumping ground to be scoured inch by inch to find the body of Te.

At the same time, the mayor apologized to the family of the victim for the earlier reports claiming the Te kidnapping could have been a "kidnap me" incident.

"In behalf of the City Government of Davao I would like to apologize to the family for the kidnap me angle that came out," Duterte said.

The mayor said Calamba will be charged with kidnapping with ransom and murder, both heinous crimes punishable by death.

Witnesses saw four armed men clad in black jackets and wearing ski masks barged inside Te's residence on the night of May 11 and demanded valuables from her. In fear, Te gave the men money and her jewelry.

The men then tied up the household helpers and locked them inside the bedroom while holding Te immobile by pointing their guns at her. The robbers then left along with the victim. (BOT)
