Tax haul not enough to meet demands of growing population
By Raquel C. Bagnol

DESPITE the efficient collection of taxes in Davao City, it is still not enough to meet the needs and demands of the growing population.

"The expenses in the country is increasing and will keep on increasing every year. It will never go down, hence we need to keep up with the financial demands to meet the needs of the people," Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said in Sunday's episode of a weekly media forum.

He attributed the increasing expenses to the growing population of the city.

"Bisa'g efficient pa ang collection of taxes, kulang gihapon ni kay kada tuig gadugang ang tawo sa Davao. In addition to more births, more people from the neighboring places transfer to Davao," Duterte said.

"With the growing population, naturally we need more money for education, health and all other services," the mayor added.

Early this month, the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) in Davao City registered a 97 percent-tax collection efficiency since 2002 with only 3 percent of taxpayers considered as fraudulent or tax evaders.

BIR Davao Revenue District Officer Evelyn Sardido earlier said that from January to April of this year alone, they collected P1.1 billion in revenue.

She said this has exceeded their target collection by P120 million. For the entire region, BIR assistant regional director Nasser Bulatero said they had already collected P1.6 billion from January to April this year exceeding their target of P1.561 billion.

Bulatero said that with the rate they are going, they expect to surpass their target collection this year of P4.8 billion. Davao City has a target collection of P3.3 billion for this year.
