More revenues from new mining operations
By Jenny Molbog-Mendoza

WITH the new Mineral Action Plan (MAP) drafted by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) 11, Davao Region is expected to generate millions of revenue from the new locators that the agency is presently eyeing on.

Edilberto Arreza, officer-in-charge of the Environment Management Bureau (EMB) 11, said during the Kapehan sa Dabaw Monday at the SM City Davao Entertainment Center that the action plan, which will be implemented within the term of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, serves as the blueprint for the revitalization program of the mineral industry.

The EMB and the regional offices of DENR, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), National Commission on the Indigenous People, National Economic and Development Authority, Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), and Mindanao Economic Development Council will work together for the implementation of the action plan.

At present, under the MAP, there are three mining projects that are anticipated to start their operations in the region within a five-year period.

These include the Diwalwal Direct State Utilization in Compostella Valley (ComVal) province, which is exploring for gold and copper. It has a potential investment of US$2 million; Pujada Nickel in Davao Oriental, with a potential investment of US$1 billion; and Amacan Copper, also in ComVal, with a potential investment of US$200 million.

Based on the MAP, these projects will generate a total of 9,700 employment opportunities and the government can get a total of US$404 million of potential revenue per year.

To date, there are two large-scale miners that are operating in the region--Holcim Cement (Ilang, Tibungco, Davao City) and Apex Mines (Maco, Davao Oriental).

With the MAP, Arreza is very positive that the entire mining industry of the region will be revitalized.
