Warding off criminals in malls, owners' concern: mayor
By Raquel C. Bagnol

MAYOR Rodrigo R. Duterte directed mall owners in Davao City to conduct their own covert operations against suspected pickpockets and other undesirable characters roaming inside their malls and not rely on police authorities alone.

"Consider this a part of your investment, police authorities are responsible for the protection of the people but once inside your mall, it's your responsibility," Duterte said Monday.

The mayor also warned the people, particularly the students to be extra careful if they are bringing with them money for enrollment and school needs as cases of theft and pocket picking rise during the opening of classes.

Duterte also urged the police to increase visibility on streets to protect students from any form of disaster.

Earlier, Duterte urged the police authorities to single out criminals. "Alam 'yan ng police sinu-sino ang magnanakaw," he added.

If police would encounter criminals armed with improvised guns or the "sumpak," Duterte advised them to shoot at the criminal.

"When the police honestly believes that his life is in danger, shoot the criminal," Duterte said.
