New sports commissioner vows to work harder
By Charles Raymond A. Maxey

LIKE any other official who is given a top position in government, William `Butch' Ramirez could not hide his elation after President Macapagal-Arroyo appointed him chairman of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).

Ramirez, the 56-year-old former sports consultant at the Ateneo de Davao University, wasted no time in thanking the President for the appointment and even attended the mass yesterday morning together with his wife Mercy to thank God Almighty for all the blessings he is getting.

"I would like to thank the President for recognizing my capability and hard work, for recognizing a man with humble beginnings. This is a triumph for all of us," Ramirez told Sun.Star Davao a day after news of his appointment spread like wildfire.

Ramirez's appointment papers were actually signed by President Arroyo last May 3. They were signed by Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita on May 24 and reached the desk of Ramirez only Monday.

For Ramirez, though, the excitement over the appointment is over, saying there's a lot of work to be done at the PSC what with the Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) just around the corner.

"I will continue to work on the programs I have started, specially in taking care of the athletes," said Ramirez, who was named as PSC commissioner during the time of President Estrada and retained by President Arroyo during her term.

Ramirez was named PSC officer-in-charge last January and has done a lot of improvements under his watch.

Aside from increasing the meal allowance of the athletes, he also improved their quarters and established a world-class cafeteria.

As PSC chair, Ramirez said he could now fully use his powers to further improve the athletes' living conditions and train them hard as they prepare for the SEAG this November.

Ramirez officially became the seventh chairman of the PSC. Holding the post before him were Aparicio Mequi, Cecil Hechanova, Gemeliano Lopez, Philip Juico, Butch Tuazon and Eric Buhain.
