'Machong Drop-out' on Howie's I-Witness docu
A GROWING number of boys are dropping out of high school, ending up jobless or in jail.
Meanwhile, the achievement gap between Filipino boys and girls is widening. Not only do more girls stay in school, they are outperforming their male classmates.
Studies show that girls are doing better on achievement tests, getting higher grades, and eventually becoming more employable.
The disparity between male teenage dropouts and female teenage achievers is the subject of Howie Severino's I-Witness documentary Monday night.
Severino and his team shadow boy-girl twins at Ramon Magsaysay High School in Cubao, one of the nation's largest, and try to figure out how the gender divide came to be.
Why are boys and girls so different? Are girls just smarter or are they raised differently? While much of the world worries about the "disadvantaged girl-child," the situation in the Philippines is the opposite, with boys clearly more disadvantaged in basic education.
I-Witness explores the reasons why and looks at what's in store for a country already led by a woman president married to an underachieving man.
I-Witness' "Machong Drop-out" airs this Monday right after Saksi over GMA-7.
