A message from God By Marianne L. Saberon
"IT IS indeed a message from God," said Bacolod Representative Monico Puetevella Thursday on the appointment of Davao City's William "Butch" Ramirez as chairman of the Philippine Sports Commission.
Puentevella, speaking over the phone, said the people of Davao and Mindano have a reason to celebrate with the development.
"I've visited Davao many times before and heard a lot of complaints. But now complain no longer since you now have a chairman and a commissioner both from Davao," Puentevella said while Ramirez and sports journalists listened over the phone during the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn.
The Ilonggo official added: "I'm happy that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo confirmed Ramirez' appointment. Based on my experience, Ramirez is the best and most qualified to the position. I'm confident of his leadership and I'm proud to have recommended him in my humble capacity."
Puentevella then congratulated Ramirez and wished him to do good work as the country plays host to the 2005 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games set on November 27 to December 5.
"Hope we can win the championship in the SEA Games. Butch, you can do it," was Puentevella's closing remarks.
Ramirez, for his part, was thankful about the appointment which, he admitted, he couldn't believe at first when news about it came out.
"I was in Bacolod last Monday and I received a call from my staff telling me that my appointment just arrived at the office. `I asked what appointment,' then she replied, `You are now the chairman.' I went to my bedroom and cried. I and my wife then went to St. Francis of Assisi for a thanksgiving Mass," the PSC chief narrated.
With the job now his, Ramirez immediately called on the commissioners for a board meeting, designating each commissioner with specific tasks.
"I told them, `My friendship with you ends when my duty begins.' I mean business. They are required to submit a monthly report on these assignments," Ramirez said.
As PSC chairman, Ramirez said he will focus on the establishment of the Philippine Institute on Sports, preparations of athletes for the SEA Games and pursuing programs that will give the country its first Olympic gold medal.
