House to probe 2 Arroyos on illegal numbers game
By Ben O. Tesiorna

THE House of Representative is set to conduct an investigation on Representatives Juan Miguel "Mikey" Arroyo and Ignacio "Iggy" Arroyo and their alleged involvement in jueteng (illegal numbers game) operations.

House Majority Leader Prospero Nograles said he just authorized four House committees to jointly conduct hearing on June 15 despite the fact that they are now adjourned.

He said this is to show to the people and the opposition that they are not trying to do any cover up on the jueteng issue.

Nograles identified the committees on public information, electoral reforms, public order and safety and committee on good government as those that would conduct the investigation on the two Arroyos.

Nograles assured that there would be no whitewash on their investigation. He admitted though that the House investigation would be more of a propaganda venue for many of their colleagues than anything else.

"Magiging pagandahan lang to eh. Kasi alam mo naman na yang mga pulitiko pag may kamera ng TV eh magpapa pogi points ang mga yan," he said.

Nograles said he was just forced to allow the investigation to show to everybody that the House leadership is giving everyone the chance to speak and air their views on the issue.

"It's like choosing between the devil and the deep blue sea eh. Kung di ko papayagan yang hearing na yan baka naman sabihin ng oposisyon na we are gagging them," Nograles explained.

On the call for the resignation of the two Arroyos from the House, Nograles said it would be unfair for the constituents of the place where the Arroyos serve.

Nograles said the best option would be for them to take a leave of absence until such time that the investigation is over.

"That would be a good middle ground. But resignation is definitely out of the question," Nograles said.

He admitted the final decision would depend on the Arroyos and not on anyone else.
