Davao grabs fifth spot in national chessfest By Marianne L. Saberon
TWO Davao City teams pulled off rousing wins in the final round of the eliminations Friday to barge into the top 10 at the close of the National Chess Team Championship in Iligan City.
The Davao City woodpushers came back strong by scoring a 4-0 shutout over Iligan-Maranao for a total of eight points to grab the fifth spot.
The Metro Toril Chess Club also scored eight points for the sixth place while the Grand Master (GM) Joey Antonio-led Tagaytay took the top spot with 13 points.
In second place was Sun-Ag National High School of Bacolod with 10 points followed by Tacloban-A in with nine points for third and Agrarian Land Reform in fourth.
National Master (NM) Prospero "Bebot" Cruz led the Davao City team win board 1 with able support from Jimmy Dano, Reynaldo Quiñonez, Pedro Tidoy and Nofre Reyes.
Metro Toril, on its part, is composed of Henry Lopez, Arnel Aton, Henry Fajardo and Erwin Aton.
The champion team will bag a cash prize of P100,000 while the runner-up will take home P60,000. The third placer will get P40,000 in the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP)-sanctioned meet.
The next three finishers will also receive cash prizes in the chessfest sponsored and hosted by the city government of Iligan headed by Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz, City Councilor Vart Belmonte and city sports director Frederick W. Siao.
It serves as the major highlight of the Araw ng Iligan festival.
