Mayor willing to step down in case of military junta
By Ben O. Tesiorna

DAVAO City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said he is more than willing to resign from his post if the event of a military junta.

This developed as Duterte appealed to military officials not to give back power to any of the incumbent politicians in case the military takes over the government.

"I will resign to give way. Sila na bahala mupili kinsay ipuli nako. Pero kung ako papilion (I will let the military choose who they want to be my replacement. But if they ask me to choose) I will look for the least ambitious man," Duterte said.

Duterte reiterated his desire for a separate Mindanao republic if ever politicians from imperial Manila successfully unseat President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo from power.

Duterte said though that the idea of a Mindanao republic is sure to become a reality in the future and another Edsa revolution would surely hasten its realization.

He said he is certain that the Bangsamoro people had long been waiting for a separate Bangsamoro nation adding that Christians in Mindanao can live side by side with their Muslim brothers under one republic.

"Or pwede pud na magseparate sila ug republic (They can also set up a separate republic). May Bangsamoro republic at may Mindanao republic," Duterte said.

Duterte's suggestion of a separate republic elicited various reactions from several sectors.

Most businessmen opposed the idea saying it is not the solution to the problem and would rather complicate things further.

Others, however, welcomed it saying it's high time for Mindanaoans to get their just share from the National Government.

Some politicians from Manila even said that once a Mindanao republic is declared they are willing to "migrate" here in Mindanao provided they be given a "visa" by Duterte.

"Everyone is welcome to live here in Mindanao," Duterte said.
