Stricter ordinance for motors sought
DAVAO City Councilor Jesus A. Zozobrado Jr. on Tuesday proposed amendments to a city ordinance requiring motorcycle riders to wear helmets as he pushed for a stricter ordinance to discourage the operations of habal-habal, privately registered motorcycles used to convey paying passengers.
In the proposed ordinance, motorcycles can only carry one passenger and both the driver and passenger should wear crash helmets. Those who fail to use the helmet while riding on a motorcyle will be arrested.
Minors below six years old shall not be allowed to ride on single motorcyles, too.
The proposed ordinance further requires that motorcycles operating along the city's street and highways be equipped with complete essential accessories that include headlights, tail lights, signal lights, brake lights, horn and side mirrors.
A traffic enforcer was earlier dismissed from his job for driving a motorcycle without a helmet.
Traffic Management Center (TMC) Chief Celso Gempesaw identified the dismissed traffic enforcer as Ronnie Aguado.
Gempesaw believes TMC members should set an example in implementing traffic rules.
Gempesaw said the TMC will strictly implement the "no helmet, no ride" policy for motorcycle rides. (AAG)
