Myanmar decides to host 2006 Asean tourism gab
DAVAO City will no longer host the 2006 Asean Tourism Forum, touted as the biggest gathering of some 3,000 tourism stakeholders, sellers and buyers all over South East Asia region.
Councilor Susan Isabel Reta, chair of the City Council committee on tourism, told reporters Tuesday that Myanmar had finally committed to host the same event.
Earlier reports showed Myanmar was backing out from hosting the event because of the alleged lack of facilities and the human rights issue there.
Southern Philippines Tourism Council chair Mary Ann "Baby" Montemayor had said that Davao City is "very much prepared" to host the tourism forum.
She anticipated that the ten-day event will open a lot of opportunities for the city.
Reta, meanwhile, said the preparations of the city will not be futile because the Philippines is scheduled to host the same forum in 2007.
Reta said Cebu City was first considered to host the event. But since the forum is scheduled every January and Cebu City celebrates Sinulog in the same month, Reta said Davao City was considered to host instead. (AAG)
