Overseas employment firm renews warning v. illegal recruiters
PHILIPPINE Overseas Employment Agency's (POEA) Mindanao regional center overseas employment adjudicator Venchito M. Bangayan Tuesday renewed earlier warnings to job applicants who wish to work abroad to verify with their office first the legality of the hiring agency before paying a single centavo.
"We have posted the lists of licensed recruiters for jobs abroad and we are asking those who have applied for work to check with our office first so that you will not fall prey to these illegal recruiters," Bangayan said in a radio interview Tuesday.
The lawyer said if a recruitment agency is found to be illegal, they can call the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) or the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) for assistance to conduct an entrapment operation.
Bangayan said that the creation of a Task Force on Illegal Recruitment created in Davao City still did not put a complete stop to the illegal recruitments.
"We have arrested more illegal recruiters and have filed cases against them, pending resolution before the City Prosecutor's Office," Bangayan said.
The latest, he said, is a suspect who pretended to be a doctor who has allegedly victimized 15 persons aspiring to work abroad as waiters and waitresses.
Bangayan also said that before leaving for abroad, workers are required to attend a pre-orientation seminar.
"The seminar is a requirement before anybody is allowed to leave the country so that they will have basic knowledge on the culture, attitude and habits of the country," Bangayan said. (RCB with Peng Aliño)
