Ledesma: The Opposition lives in a house of glass
By Jun Ledesma

"What had been played so far was the expurgated version of the tape conversation. One that would suit the dubious agenda of the political opposition."

"Let him who is without sin cast the first stone."

This biblical test, which warded off the mob that was about to stone a sinful woman to death, a supreme punishment in those times. Fast forward to modern times a wise counsel said: "If you live in a house of glass never throw stone at your neighbor." I would add to that: for he might throw you back the rock of Gibraltar.

Arroyo Watch: Sun.Star blog on President Gloria Arroyo

When already 60 percent of Metro Manila either heard or read the controversial taped conversation even the overly protective majority bloc have no other recourse but agree to playing the explosive bugged talk between President GMA and Commissioner Virgilio "Garci" Garcillano.

The opposition thought they have stoned GMA and expects GMA to throw back bread at them as in giving them the Presidency they hankered and have long salivated for. This is not happening. It turns out that the reason why the ruling party congressmen voted in favor of playing the tapes was that GMA's call to Garci is overwhelmed by the number of calls from the opposition. Are they saying now they are just calling the embattled commissioner to say "hello" and "how do you do?"

What had been played so far was the expurgated version of the tape conversation. One that would suit the dubious agenda of the political opposition. Gloria's confession which unfortunately some of the popish Catholics bishops are not about ready to accept and forgive gives the President some relief in that her accusers did not come clean when they faulted her for calling a Comelec official.

I have heard the abridged tape myself the first time it was aired in ANC but I failed to hear GMA directing "Garci" to rig the results of the elections. At best, she was concerned that her lead of 1-million votes might be reduced given her debacle in many towns and cities in Muslim areas. Of course the opposition will contrive their own deduction to condemn GMA and use their inference to whip up the mass into protest and hysteria. Whether or not the President will accept her indiscretion and accept a lapse in judgment, the drooling opposition will just the same stone her to force her to abdicate the presidency.

Unfortunately for the opposition and their allies in the communist front, GMA is has the balls, pardon my saying that, and the guts and not amount of sloganeering and jeering from the left and the right can send her scampering. Unlike the previous people power episodes, which are spontaneous, this one lead by Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay, Jinggoy Estrada etal, looks pipsqueak and commercialized. Fortunato Abat importuning looks even more pathetic. Nobody seem to want a civilian-military junta.

Even the stand of the opposition politicians has become convoluted. Sen. Nene Pimentel says he doe not want a repeat of peoples power and demanded just the same the resignation of GMA and Veep Noli de Castro, to be followed by a snap elections. That does not seem to look like its following the constitutional process. Now he wants it wholesale-GMA and Noli's resignation. As my favorite mother-in-law would say, "ano ka hilo?"

BTW, The Rotary Cub of Davao, the premier Rotary Club in Mindanao will hold its induction ceremonies this Thursday night. PAL's Vice President for Mindanao, Doming Duerme, takes over the Presidency. Doming's big boss, the new president of PAL, Jimmy Bautista, will be the guest of honor during the ceremony which will be held in Grand Regal Hotel in Lanang.
