Davao's Valle moves on By Charles Raymond A. Maxey
GANDY Valle and four other Filipino cue artists barged into the next round of the 2005 Kaohsiung World Championship following contrasting victories in the knockout stage Wednesday night.
Valle, the pride of Davao City, carved out a thrilling 10-8 win over Do Hoang Quan in the winner's break format to earn a date with dangerous Ying-Chieh Chen of Taiwan in the last 32.
Marlon Manalo likewise pulled off a pulsating 10-9 triumph over Charles Bryant to advance. He will meet Chien-Che Huang of Taiwan in the next phase of the knockout stage.
Warren Kiamco destroyed David Reljic of Australia, 10-6, to arrange a date with Jung-ling Chang.
Alex Pagulayan, the defending champion, and Rodolfo Luat also advance.
Pagulayan won over Park Shin-Young of Korea, 10-5, while Luat upstaged Vietnamese Luong Chi Dung, 10-1.
Pagulayan will next face Hungarian Vilmos Foldes, one of the tough competitors in the field.
With the departure of Francisco "Django" Bustamante, Dennis Orcullo and Ronnie Alcano, only five Pinoy bets remained in contention in the world's premier 9-ball event.
Alcano fell to German Thorsten Hohmann in the Round-of-64, 7-10.
All the Filipino bets and the rest of the round-of-32 matches are scheduled to be played starting late Thursday afternoon.
