Arroyo must soon appoint replacements for resigned cabinet execs

DAVAO City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Incorporated (DCCCII) president Bienvenido Cariaga said President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo must name immediately the replacement of her cabinet members who resigned Friday to prevent a vacuum in the bureaucracy .

"Probably, their resignation was in response to the call of the President for them to tender their courtesy resignation and give the President a free hand in choosing whom to re-appoint as new members of her cabinet," Cariaga said.

He, however, said DCCCII is apolitical and they remain neutral in their position.

Cariaga said when the controversy broke out particularly the wiretapped CD, nobody wants to invest in the city.

"They took the wait and see attitude and make decisions after things settled down," he said.

As a lawyer, he said the issue involved in the tape scandal is an impeachable offense but the opposition is reluctant on the issue of impeachment dahil matatalo sila, and they do not have the number.

He said Arroyo is really in a very difficult situation and in worst case scenario may be forced to resign if there will be another people power.

"But the President has several options and even have the power to declare Martial Law in order to protect her and the nation," he said.

"For as long as she has the support of the military at habang marami pa siyang kaalyado sa kongreso, the President can do it."

Sa ngayon wela pang masyadong effect sa business but if their will be disturbances like civil disobedience then it will definitely hit the economic sector, he said.

He said what the country is now losing opportunities for investments because no investor will come when there is political instability.

"Foreign investors who are interested ay di muna mag invest at maghihintay muna na magsettle down ang issue," he said.

Cariaga said that they are for the constitutional government and will support who sits as the country's leader based on the mandate of the constitution.

Cariaga said they prefer a president who lines up policies that are good for the business, one who must be God-fearing, honest, diligent and sincere in delivering public service.

He said those who will be appointed in the Cabinet must have proper educational qualification and experience.

He likened the political turmoil to a storm that will soon pass away and the country will overcome it.

"I hope the President will handle it properly and when the scenario worsen her successor will also do the same," he added. (PIA/PDB)
