Manalo enters quarter-finals By Marianne L. Saberon
FORMER Asian snooker champion Marlon Manalo of the Philippines demolished Taiwanese Ying-chieh Chen 11-0 Friday to barge into the quarter-finals of the World Pool Championship.
The 29-year-old Manalo allowed Chen only four visits at the table in the hour-long match.
Manalo, the only Filipino campaigner in the cuefest that stakes $75,000 to the champion, will fight for flag and country when he collides with former world champion Mika Immonen in the quarters.
Immonen survived an 11-8 victory over American Corey Deuel earlier.
Manalo was quoted by the worldpoolchampionship.com website as saying: "I have a goal in my life and responsibility on my shoulders to carry the flag of the Philippines now, I'm concentrating on my game and taking it to the next level. I feel confident but there's a lot of pressure on me which I don't mind. If there's no pressure on me I get over-confident and lose to lesser players so I prefer to play better players and I'm looking forward to playing Mika Immonen in the quarter-finals."
The Filipino said he is taking it rack by rack and he doesn't mind about the score.
"In June I was in America for the first time and won the Reno Open and the Hard Times Summer Jamboree and the 40 days I spent there have helped me to live like a pool player.
The mental side of the game is so important and I like to learn from players like Tony Drago because he doesn't ever think about his opponent, only his own game. I'm feeling good now and I feel confident that I can win this tournament but I am not going to get carried away at the moment," Manalo added.
He, however, is assured of a $10,000 purse should he loses to Immonen.
In other match-ups, Thorsten Hohmann will play against Chia-ching Wu while Kun-Chang Huang will take on Po Chen Kuo and Rodney Morris will clash against Nick vd Berg.
