Dondon and Lani: Through the fire By Jojie Alcantara Witerary
WELL, I can't help putting that title up since it is the best description for a lasting relationship between a young lady dentist and a brave firefighter!
Fire Inspector Randolf "Dondon" Arbutante and Dr. Celani May "Lani" Anthony exchanged wedding vows at the Saint Francis of Assisi Church on July 2. With an entourage gaily decked in green and gold, the couple walked through a line of saber escorts who are the alumni brothers of Dondon.
Dondon's mother, Aurora Viuda de Arbutante, proudly watched her son on his special day. Lani's family is in the US but Luzminda Viuda De Anthony, flew back home with daughter Liway, to attend the wedding of her youngest daughter. Life can be nice and funny, because you see, Lani's oldest sister, Mayumi is engaged to the groom's brother, Richard. So it's a close-knitted family, I tell you.
While I was lecter during the wedding ceremony (am related to the bride), Lani's buddy, Dr. Rovic Cuasito (of KSP and Sabado Jam fame), hosted the reception held in Jack's Ridge Restaurant in Shrine Hill overlooking an impressive vista of Davao below. It was a blend of the old and new. The cake was sliced by Dondon's saber. Roses were thrown to the single women in lieu of bouquet catching. As for the garter catching, it was a contest of socks and shoes taken off for single men, which adds spice (and odor) to the party. Gifts from the States were raffled off to the guests, courtesy of Lani's family.
Lani's wedding gown was beautifully created by renowned designer Dodji Batu, while the beautiful music was impressively sung by a group of young people who called themselves D' CUZINS (from Nemz Music School).
To Lani and Don, I wish you a life as passionate and lasting as the professions you love. Take care of Lani, whom I still consider my baby cousin until now. As for Don, may the only fire you put out is the one in the neighborhood. Best wishes!
