Councilor quits as housing committee chair
AMIDST allegations of corruption, City Councilor Victorio S. Advincula Sr. Tuesday gave up the chairmanship of the City Council committee on urban and rural housing.
In a privileged speech, Advincula said it is better that he resigns voluntarily as chairman of the committee believing it is the best thing for him to do under the circumstances.
"My resignation is irrevocable," Advincula said.
Advincula refuted the alleged malicious imputations that they are asking money from housing developers to expedite processing of locational clearances and development permits.
"I would not hesitate to deny these malicious imputations from shadowy characters. Let them come forward if it is true. Why don't they tell us who are milking them. I admit there were delays in the issuance of some clearances and permits but the delays were reasonable," Advincula said.
Advincula reiterated that there are no unwarranted delays on the part of the City Council. He said there are delays in the approval of clearances and permits because some members of the council would even request for deferment of the matter for further deliberation.
"I conduct committee hearings. I have to give ample time to those who are in hearing and have questions," Advincula said.
Following Advincula's resignation, Councilor Jesus A. Zozobrado Jr. also took the podium and tendered his resignation as member of the committee.
As a member of the committee that is reportedly tainted now with malicious imputations, Zozobrado believes he had no other alternative as well but to tender his resignation to give way to reorganization.
The City Council accepted the resignation of both councilors in their respective positions in the committee.
However, when Councilor Emmanuel D. Galicia Sr. was elected as the new chairman of the housing committee, he asked Zozobrado to recall his resignation from the committee.
Zozobrado expressed great respect for Galicia and therefore recalled his resignation from the committee. (AAG)
