Solon welcomes opposition move to impeach Arroyo
DAVAO City 1st District Representative Prospero Nograles Tuesday welcomed the move of the opposition to embrace the constitutional process by preparing to proceed with the impeachment case against President Arroyo.
Nograles, who is House Majority Floor Leader, said it would have been easier to proceed with the impeachment of the President were it not for the opposition's continued rejection of the rules of impeachment which have been referred four times for plenary approval.
With this decision of the opposition, Nograles appealed to them to forego plans to launch protest actions because this is already hurting the country's economy. "I'm glad they are taking route and dropping their old position that impeachment is an administration trap because it is not. It's the peaceful logical legal way to remove the president," said Nograles, who chairs the House Committee on Rules.
"I urge opposition to immediately approve impeachment rules which they have objected to four times on the floor already. Its approval is imperative now," Nograles added.
Nograles made the statement after the two factions of the opposition bloc in the House joined together to push through with the filing of impeachment charges against the President.
The opposition bloc tapped Representative Ronaldo Zamora of San Juan was tapped to study the legal grounds for. They said they will file the complaint as soon as Congress opens its second regular session on July 25, which also in time for the State of the Nation Address of the President.
Nograles maintained the House leadership is committed in exercising its mandate to look into the impeachment case against President Arroyo with cold neutrality just to ensure that government institutions are not destroyed by the prevailing mob rule mentality, which is being espoused by the opposition.
He said the House rules committee would immediately ask the adoption of House impeachment rules so that they can immediately proceed to a full-blown impeachment process.
He added that if the President so desires, she can call Congress for a special session specifically for the purpose of proceeding with the impeachment process. (PR)
